Effective and reliable chiller operation to control air temperature in Hospitals is essential when providing lifesaving and critical healthcare in operating theatres, dedicated healthcare suites (e.g. oncology), and ward environments.
The Project:
In order to maintain a high efficiency of their chilled and heating circuit system, a hospital’s dedicated heating engineer contacted us to see if there were any further improvements to be made. The location of the chillers on the roof of the main building meant that exposure to high and low seasonal temperatures presented challenges, and they contacted ADEY Commercial to investigate the issue.
The Brief:
The hospital’s heating engineer was keen to understand if there were any additional filters and chemical treatments that could further improve the condition of the water and agreed to a full suite of system water tests to determine the best course of action moving forward.
Samples were taken from various points in the system, and a full chemistry analysis was undertaken at one of ADEY’s UKAS accredited laboratories. The results were then fully interpreted and explained to the engineer, and recommendations were made to further improve the water quality, which in turn would enhance the chiller operation.
The Solution:
Following consideration of the recommendations, a schedule of works was agreed and a decision was made to install both inline and sidestream filters, with the addition of ADEY MC35® Non-Drain System Cleaner. We also recommended a full dose of ADEY MCZero+® Glycol.
The filters installed were two 6″ MagnaClean Commercial® filters and two MagnaClean CMX Maxi® filters – with the system location of filters chosen for minimal service disruption. This combination was selected to thoroughly clean the system without the requirement for full system drainage, whilst removing both magnetic and non-magnetic debris and protecting the system against further debris buildup.

The Results:
Debris began to be collected and removed from the system immediately. This informed a decision to install more CMX Maxi filters with ADEY system cleaner and inhibitor across the site and other hospital sites in the area. Another phase of system protection activity was planned to follow, with ongoing water testing to monitor system health.
Hospital – East Coast
At another hospital wishing to properly protect and maintain exposed rooftop chiller units, the contractor was seeking a reliable solution to prevent the freezing of system water. Despite pipe lagging and external protection from the effect of high and low temperatures, the contractor wanted to further protect against any risk of freezing.
Following direct contact and discussions regarding system size, ADEY Commercial was able to calculate the volume of an antifreeze solution MCZero+® required for these essential chiller systems. Correct calculation of chemical dosing will ensure optimum system protection and avoid the risk of overdosing.
To check that the chemical was effectively distributed around the system, levels were tested upon dosing and again four days later, to be satisfied that the whole system was properly protected, and no further treatment was required.
