Five Tips for Saving Energy at Home

Trying to live a more eco-friendly life and save the pennies can feel overwhelming at first, so we wanted to share some simple tips to help you with this.

Is your heating not working at its best?

It may not be the boiler’s fault.

Naturally occurring corrosion in your heating system water can cause SLUDGE.

Sludge is the most common cause of central heating breakdown in the UK, so if you've got it, you could get left with no heating and hot water, and potentially a big bill too.

Sludge pouring out of radiator

Are you finding cold spots on your radiators? Do you need to bleed them often or notice a black water coming from them? These are signs of sludge. page 1

Sludge can cause a number of problems in your heating system that you might notice...

  • Heating on for longer
  • Cold spots in radiators
  • Black water when you bleed the radiators
  • Turning up the heating to get warm
  • Restarting the boiler
  • Boiler breakdown

Your heating engineer can test the water to see what's going on and let you know the best course of action to get your system back to its best.

Fitting a MagnaClean® filter underneath your boiler will help protect it from suspended sludge in the system water.

Our range of MagnaClean® filters come in a range of sizes, so there's one for every home. All of them contain a powerful magnet designed to maximise capture, so your boiler is protected from the first time water flows through it.

To stay protected, just ask your heating engineer to clean and service your filter when they're there to do the annual boiler service.

To protect your heating system once its clean you should...

1. Install a MagnaClean® magnetic filter
2. Add chemical inhibitor (MC1+®) to the system

While a magnetic filter captures sludge that's suspended in the water before it gets into the boiler, a chemical inhibitor like MC1+® can help prevent sludge building up in the first place.

Corrosion occurs naturally and can't be stopped completely, but MC1+® coats the metals in your heating system to reduce contact with the water. This slows down the corrosion rate, so sludge takes much longer to create.

When you've got a lot of sludge in your system, there's no point in adding protection until you've got it all out.

A MagnaCleanse® system flush is a quick, gentle and very effective way of removing sludge build-up from the system, so it's perfect for systems of all ages.

It connects onto your pipework and uses your boiler to push your heating system water past two large, powerful magnets. Your heating engineer might use a VibraClean® agitator on your radiators to help lift the toughest sludge and get it into the magnet pots ready to be removed from the system.
