This winter may feel like a tough time to talk to customers about ‘non-emergency’ jobs such as system cleaning and maintenance. But, armed with the best information and knowledge, as an industry, we can work together to tackle homeowners’ deepest concerns.
Research commissioned by ADEY among 2,000 homeowners, has highlighted three customer worries this winter that installers can help to solve.
1. How can I cut my energy bills?
Answering this question is probably the single most powerful piece of information you can share with a customer, and ONLY verified for ADEY’s products.
Here’s what you need to know. Protecting a heating system with a MagnaClean® filter, as part of ADEY’s Best Practice® approach, has been independently proven by KIWA Gastec to save up to 7% on heating bills year on year* and get up to 47% more heat from radiators without more cost.
High energy costs are still a big concern for every household so it’s unsurprising that many are looking to do all they can to reduce bills. Our survey found that three in four homeowners would like to make improvements to their heating systems that will reduce costs. However, more than half of those surveyed had no idea that dirty water circulating in the system could mean they’re paying over the odds.
With so few people aware that taking simple steps to ensure system water is clean and free from damaging sludge and other debris could help save them money, now is actually a good time for installers to step in and offer advice.

2. How can I avoid having to replace my boiler?
The industry expected lifespan of a boiler is 12 to 15 years but if properly maintained it can last longer – up to 7 years in fact! Using effective magnetic filtration with MagnaClean, hand in hand with good quality water treatment chemicals, as well as having an annual boiler service, will ensure it operates at optimum efficiency and reduces the risk of breakdown.
For many homeowners, these ‘added years’ will be an important incentive for saying ‘yes’ to planned and regular care of their heating systems. Breakdowns can be expensive to fix and half of the homeowners we surveyed said they couldn’t afford to replace their boiler if it broke down, so helping customers to extend its lifespan is another aspect of your expertise that’s critical.
3. How can I reduce my environmental impact?
Reducing costs isn’t the only concern for homeowners. Two-thirds of survey respondents are also worried about the impact of their heating on carbon emissions, but over half don’t know what to do about it.
In the same way that proper heating system maintenance increases efficiency and reduces energy bills, it also helps reduce carbon emissions. In fact, independent research proves that getting rid of the dirty water with a flush, fitting an ADEY MagnaClean filter and taking care of the system with an annual service reduces carbon emissions by as much as 7% a year.
It might feel difficult to have these conversations with customers, but in truth, installers have the knowledge to help customers save energy, money and emissions at a time when sharing this advice is very welcome. So don’t compromise on this important part of your customer service.
