BUILDING INFORMATION MODELLING (BIM)

WHAT IS BIM?

BIM (Building Information Modelling) is a collaborative way of working, based on digital technologies which unlock more efficient methods of designing, creating and maintaining assets. BIM embeds key product and asset data, and a 3-dimensional computer model that can be used for effective management of information throughout a project lifecycle – from earliest concept through to operation – in a single asset information package.

A BIM is an intelligent digital model of a building. The data within this model is generated and used during the design, construction and management of a building.

WHY BIM?

In 2011, the UK Government published its Construction Strategy that outlined the requirement for fully collaborative 3D BIM as a mandatory public building procurement process for all buildings over £5m from 2016. The key objective is to reduce capital cost and the carbon burden from the construction and operation of the built environment by 20%.
